Driving In Florida

First Choice Vacation Homes Blog

1. OBSERVE SPEED LIMITS (MPH)
Rural Interstates 70mph/112kph
Urban Interstates 65mph/104kph
Other limited access roads 70mph/112kph
Urban Districts 30mph/48kph

2. DRIVE ON THE RIGHT

3. ALCOHOL LAWS

  • You must be over 21 to buy or conusme alcohol in Florida
  • Florida has a Zero Tolerance law for drivers under 21. This means that any driver under 21 that is stopped by law enforcement and has a blood alcohol level of .02 or higher will automatically have their Florida drivers license suspended for 6 months. The .02 limit really means that you cannot have a single drink and drive. And thats the idea.- You must not drink alcohol whilst driving a vehicle
  • For drivers over 21 the legal limit in Florida is .08. Regardless of your age be aware that drinking and driving is considered a serious offense. Below we have summarized the penalties in the state of Florida for a first offense DUI, but the average cost including legal defense, fines, and auto insurance increases is $8000.
  • You must not carry opened alcohol containers in the passenger area of a vehicle

4. DRIVING LICENCES

  • You are not required to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) in the USA as long as you hold a valid driving licence. It is often the case that you are required to have held your licence for a minimum of 1 year.  In the USA the driving licence includes the drivers photo, so if you are from a country where this is not the case, you should carry your passport with you.
  • UK passport holders should remember to take both the photocard and paper licence with you.

5. CHILD RESTRAINTS

  • Children under 4 years are legally required to be provided with a child restraint in a car. Those aged between 4-5 years are able to be secure with an adult seat retraint if no alternative is available.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Each state has different driving laws so be sure check each individual laws if driving across states.
